Sipadan, located 30 km off Semporna on the East Coast of Sabah is rated as the world's top dive sites. For the true diving enthusiast, the island needs no introduction. Praised by the internationally renowned oceanographer and filmmaker Jacques Cousteau as one of the best diving spots in the world, it is unique as the only oceanic island in Malaysia. Its geographic position puts Sipadan in the centre of the richest marine habitat in the world, the heart of the Indo-Pacific basin. Sipadan rises 600m from the seabed to provide spectacular wall dives and underwater garden. More than 3,000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species have been classified in this richest of ecosystem.

Sipadan Island Diving

There are a lot of marine habitats live near Sipadan Island. It was reported to have more than 3,000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species under its ecosystem. There are some other species of animals live here too. Examples: Pelagic species such as manta rays, eagle rays, scalloped hammerhead sharks, turtle and whale sharks.
The Sipadan Island lies about five degrees north of the equator in the Sulawesi Sea (Celebes Sea).
There are a total of 12 dive sites in Sipadan Island. Just to name a few popular dive sites: the Turtle Cavern, Barracuda Point, South Point and Hanging Gardens.
Since year 2005, Malaysian government has made a decision to move all existing onsite dive resort operators out of the Sipadan Island. The main reason for doing so is to conserve and maintain a balanced marine and land ecosystem on Sipadan’s environments. Therefore, if you want to dive in Sipadan Island, you will have to travel by ferry from the mainland or nearby islands.
If you want to dive in Sipadan, there are a few options. You can fly from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau and the flight will take about an hour. Then you want to rent a taxi to Semporna which will take another hour. From Semporna, you should be able to find speedboat service and it will take about 40 minute to reach the island. It is recommended that you book all the transportation beforehand.

Sipadan Island Resort, Accommodation Packages Review

There ware a few resorts and accommodations in areas near Sipadan Island. Sipadan Water Village is one of them that is constructed with Bajau architectural design. The entire resort is built over water and the materials that are used to build the resorts is called ironwood. This ironwood serves the purpose to minimize damage to the existing reef. It is one of the best resorts in Sipadan.
Another resort is Kapalai Island Dive Resort, it is only a few minutes away from the islands of Sipadan and Mabul. The resort is sitting on its sturdy stilts on the shallow sandbanks of the Ligitan Reefs. This resort is planned and built carefully to give the tourist an airy, comfortable, sunny water village with no land in sight. Diving around Kapalai is easy. The water is shallow and crystal clear. The beautiful coral around this area will definitely give you an unforgettable experience.
